Better Late than never!!

I have not updated the blog with all the images that I have taken in a few days, mainly due to being very busy. I am now going to spend the next few hours posting up all the images from the completed props and the opening day of the exhibition.

Finishing the Props

As you can see from above the last days of prop making turned my back garden into a major mess, there was paint everywhere, splats being painted and PVA glued. Me and Jon were in full force to get everything done in time for the exhibition.

We spent the day working on the pencils, instead of trying to do both the tops and props at the same time. We wanted to focus all our attention on one thing together, complete it!! then carry on with the next job.

Once all the pencils had been painted with poster paint, I was entrusted by jon to add some shading and highlights to the Pencils. I worked away and managed to pull off that cartoon glimmer look.

Nothing like a good pose at the end of a hard days work, me and Jon had successfully completed all the props that would go into the exhibition. All the pencils, splats and cones were ready and packed in the car to be transported away.

Making the Tops (The hard part)]
This was a very daunting task for us, because we were working on other peoples tops not our own no mistakes could be made, because we would not be given another top. We had a few spares to work on at the start which was handy as it let us test and perfect the way we produced the back of the tops.

The tops were ironed by myself, to remove all the creases and then a heat printed transfer of the logo was placed on the back just under the neck line. Pressed down hard with the iron until stuck to the cotton, then the backing was peeled off to reveal the logo in all its glory!!

Once I had done the logo with the iron, the top was given to Jon. Who had made a stencil out of asistate, the stencil was placed on the top and then then a layer of poster paint was added.

Then once the paint had dried, we were left with the logo of the exhibition (heat transfer) and a bright design studio text in the pink and purple letters (mathching the website).

All the tops were then left to dry, scattered around my house.

Once dry, I decided to put one on to see how the logo looked when not on a flat surface but on a person. Needless to say the logos on the back have come out really well, me and Jon did a fantastic job and I am really pleased with the result. (All the hard work payed off.)

The hard days work......

Today me and Jon Embarked on the challenge of creating all the props for the exhibition. It was a nice sunny day and we decided to work outside, mainly so that the coats of paint would dry faster.

Jon had already made his 3 pencils out of cardboard and had to do some more paper mashay on the bottoms. He got on with this, while I finished painting the rest of my splats. We had a lot to do and needed to crack on if we were ever going to meet the deadline.

(The above the image shows jon hard at work with the paper mashay.)

(The above image shows the paint spalt being painted, with the new blue paint.)

(As I am not seen in any of the photos, (mainly being the camera man) I wanted to prove that I was present doing the work. You could not mistake that mug for anyone else!!!

Painting the Pencils

Me and Jon started painting one of the pencils yellow, we applied one coat and then realised there were elements of the paper mashay showing through. This meant that we needed to apply about 4 coats, so that the yellow really shined through. We have left the base and tip, which will be painted tomorow with the appropriate colours.

As you can see we managed to miss up my dads back garden with paint, we have a lot of supplies and bits and bobs to complete the tasks. We made sure that we were making the most of our time, getting as many done at the same time as possible.

Everything that was being completed was being moved over near the house, so that we knew what was being completed. Just another step to ensuring the work was being done and kept on track.

I then spent a good few hours with the old airbrush, adding all the highlights to all the splats. A simple job that took quite a long time but was really worth it in the end, it makes the splats really look "cartooney" and more appealing.
Making the Tops for the Students

For the tops we decided to use a transfer for the paint bucket logo and use a stencil for the text, which will then have painted through. We applied the transfer with an iron, it stuck to the top really well (we decided to go for the transfer due to the detail of the logo.) The paint of pink and purple was then kocked up and painted through.

(The above image shows the log all done on the back, we are really happy with this mixture of paint and transfer, really brings together the paint and digtial designs created by the team.

The front of the tops

We wanted to test what to do on the front of the tops, this top was actually one of mine so we didnt mind messing it up. We painted on big spalts (based on the paper mashay ones created.) We had a long talk and think that it looked really plain, at that moment I decided to run outside with the top and thorw a bombardment of paint over it to make it more interesting.

Needless to say it worked!! We have decided that the small paint splats were better than the larger ones we made, we will be making the rest tomorow. But will only be applying small paint splats not the larger ones and will be keeping the back plain.

THE END OF THE DAY

Today was a sucsesfull day for me and jon Jon managed to get 2 of the main bodys of pencil, I managed to complete all the splats, spray on all the highlights and add a pva glue shiny layer. We still have a lot of work to do but are on track and are working as hard as possible to get it all done in time. I am very happy with all the work that we have prodcued and look foward to seeing it all be completed, me and jon are working well as a team with all the tasks we have been given to complete!!

(I hope you appreciate all the work we are putting in Mariana!!)

Kicking in Gear the Exhibition

Last week, I brought up the question about what clothing. There was an idea of having us all wear old clothes and then have them spray painted, but no offonce to savva this was a nasty idea and me and jon decided that we were going to go with our plain white top with paint splats. I made up some concepts to send to everyone so that they would understand what we are going to do.

17th May 2010

Today was a very good day for getting bits done and sorted for the exhibition, we had sent out e-mails to tell everyone to come in and give us a white top so that it can be designed for the weekend (by myself and Jon) the turn out was quite good receiving over half of the amount of shirts.
Me and Jon will start working tomorrow on the logo that will be sprayed on the back and the templates etc (shown in detail tomorrow).

Inside University

Myself, Jon, Mike, Richard, Martin, Savva, Craig and Teresa. All turned up and spent the day collecing everyone images (A3 work) collating them all together and checking that nothing was pixelated etc. We then took all the work on a disk drive to the printing department and got them all printed, all the work came out really well. There was no problems with the printing and savva managed to laminate all the work which made it look even better, really bringing out all the colours.

Me, Jon, Teresa and craig. Also went and picked up a 3 seater sofa from a shop for free, that will be used in the exhibition. We carried it from the shop to uni, only to find it would not fit in the lift so it has been left on the ground floor near the other seats (blending in) till we pick it up friday haha.

Some more work for the exhibition

As we all know, I have been Mr. Splat maker for the exhibiton, well know we know the location and time is starting to run out. I have been in full creation mode to get enough done, after seeing the size of the shop I knew this would not be an easy task. I was determined to come out with 10 splats in a range of diffrent shapes and sizes.

Luckily I managed to get loads of cardboard boxes from BnQ, they are not as thick as the original that I have made but will still be a good size. I then proceeded to draw on all the diffrent "cartoon splats" using pencil and a thick black perminant marker.

I then spent allot of time, cutting then out with a stanley knife and scissors. Needless to say it took a fair amount of time to do (mainly because I had chosen to make very tricky designs.) Some of the cardboard had become quite weak, but I used celotape to hold them together. Also once paper mashay is applied then it will become stiff again.

I then went ahead with the paper mashay, using kitchen towl and a mixture of water and strong pva glue. It was a very sticky job, but somone had to do it!! I just put on a good film or two and did one at a time unti they were all done. Then it was a case of letting them dry, as to go rock solid it takes at least overnight and then some.....

(Above is an image of a splat that had dried the night before and was all ready to be painted.) It was then just a case of adding a thick layer of poster paint to cover all the white paper mashay. I will be painting some yellow and blue as well, for the yellow I will apply a white primer before painting so that the yellow will stand out and be bright.

Here you can see another smaller one that was painted in yellow, It does not look as good as the original mainly becasue of the highlights and extra layer of pva glue to make it shiny. I will not start airbrushing the splats until they have all been painted with poster paint, so they can all be done in one go.

Once all the paper mashay has dried I will spend the rest of tomorow painting them and letting them dry. ( I have probably produced too many for the space that we have been given, but at the end of the day it is better to have more than less.)

Tomorow

Jon will be comming round and we are going to start crating the designs for the tops and finishing his pencils and I will continue to make my spalts. ( So we have a lot of work ahead of us.)

Pages of the Portfolio

I have been working over the past week on "designing" pages for my portfolio, instead of just taking an image of the work and putting it on a page... but using images from the work and creating backgrounds, texts headers etc. Seeing as we are designers everything you present must be designed or you prove how you dont take into account all areas of design.

(Front of the Portfolio)

The front of the portfolio will be stuck to the card of my newly created binder.

The rest of the pages will be displayed below, I am not going to exsplain what each one is at the moment, you will notice that each page has a sheet of rounded paper near the bottom right, this is where the Title, Aim and Description will go. I will be finished the rest of the pages and getting that done asap!!
